Tom Cruise is an American actor best known for his roles in Top Gun and the Mission Impossible series. Devoutly religious, his original ambition was to become a priest. However, at the age of 18 he decided to abandon that dream and took on an acting career instead. His first role was a small part in Endless Love. The movie that quickly propelled him to stardom was Top Gun, which was a huge box office hit. He continued to make hugely commercially successful films Mission Impossible, Vanilla Sky, and Jerry Maguire - which garnered him an Oscar nomination. In 1990, he converted to the Church of Scientology and since then has been under continuous media scrutiny for his religious beliefs. He is set to appear next in Oblivion along side Morgan Freeman.
